James LEARMONTH {M} [P781] = UNKNOWN {F} [P782]
James:
Born EST ?? ??? 1670
The following can be found in the Cross & Burness Kirk Minutes from 1708
James Lerman being called in and enquired whither or not he went to 'win fraughts' upon the sabbath day denyed it, but confessed his sons did it. The session appoints them to compear before the pulpit the next time the sermon falls here.
There is no further mention of the incident, although this appeared on the second last page of the minutes, the continuation being unfortunately lost, as it would probably have named the sons when they appeared before the pulpit.
Not exactly sure of what 'win fraughts' meant, but looks like they broke the sabbath, and had to stand in a place of public repentance in church the following Sunday.
There is no indication as to the age of the sons. You could assume that they were at least young adults, responsible for their own behaviour before they had been called before the pulpit to repent, so say at 16 in 1708 would give a DOB of 1692. The earliest date prior to finding this information, of Archibald or Robert was that of the birth of Robert's daughter Margaret in 1745. That would make the sons aged 53, too old just to be starting family.
Must therefore assume that there is a generation missing in between James and Archibald or Robert.

Family
No proof currently exists, or is likely to be found to indicate that James was the father of Archibald, Margaret or Robert, but the scarcity of Learmonth's in the Sanday records of the time makes some form of relationship a distinct possibility.
The regular witnessing of each others children's Christenings should be enough to prove that Archibald, Margaret and Robert were indeed brothers and sister. See details elsewhere.
