John:
Born 10 Dec 1749, Lady, Sanday
Christened 24 Dec 1749, Lady, Sanday
Twin of Elisabeth. Christening witnessed by George Traill of Hobbister and Mrs Traill.
This is one of two John Learmonth's who could have married Margaret Fairweather. Have gone for this one because their first born was also named Archibald. John's father, Archibald Learmonth was also witness at the christening of daughter Elisabeth.
In the Orkney Archives Court Records SC11/5/1781, John Learmonth, Merchant in Sanday, did not appear when summoned to appear in the Tolbooth in Kirkwall on a charge of owing £24 - 1/1d from a bill dated 12 May 1775 from Messrs Anderson & Lothian, Merchants, Glasgow. £10 had been paid in 1777, but the rest was outstanding. As John failed to appear on 25 Oct 1781, this was taken as a confession of guilt, and the Sheriff discerned against him.
Margaret:
Died 17 Apr 1813, Kirkwall
Archibald {M} [P2] = Jean DRUMMOND {F} [P3] > Family [F2]
Archibald:
Born 13 Jan 1754, Lady, Sanday
Christened 25 Feb 1754, Lady, Sanday
His mother is not named in the Christening records.
Christening witnessed by Archibald Reid and Margaret Scott.
In the Orkney Archives Court Records SC11/5/1783 Archibald Learmonth Jnr, Merchant in Kirkhouse, Sanday was taken to court for debts due to William Watt Jnr & Co, Merchants in Kirkwall. This sum was for £1 - 9/5d from 18 Aug 1781 and 4/4d from 11 Sept 1783. Archibald failed to appear at the Tolbooth in Kirkwall for the trial, therefore the Sheriff discerned against him.
Another court record, SC11/5/1789, Archibald Learmonth, tenant in Clett, Sanday owed £7 14/- to James Heddle of Rennibuster, Firth, and was summoned to appear in the Tolbooth on 5 March 1789. He did not appear, therefore the Sheriff discerned against him. Not sure if this is the same Archibald.
Family
In the Lady OPR, an Archibald Learmonth and Ursula Logie gave birth to twins John and Elizabeth 10 Dec 1749 c 24 Dec 1749. On 13 Jan 1754 an Archibald became the father of yet another Archibald, but the name of his spouse was not mentioned. Assumption made that this is the same Archibald as the one married to Ursula. Archibald II also named his second daughter Orcilla, probably a misspelling of Ursula.
Ursula was mentioned again in the OPR as witness at christening of James, son of James Wilson and Margaret Learmonth, in 1762.
A John Learmonth later married Margaret Fairweather. They had a son Archibald c 24 Nov 1771 in Cross & Burness, and Alexander b 03 Jan 1776 c 07 Jan 1776 in Lady, Sanday.
Margaret Learmonth married James Wilson and had a large family. Witnesses at various christenings included Robert Learmonth, John Learmonth and Archibald Learmonth, a strong indication that they were closely related (brothers) to Margaret.
John Learmonth named his first son Archibald, as did the second Archibald. This could also indicate that they named their sons after their father, the first Archibald.
