Deflection: that's what happens when you roll a ball straight down the middle of the lane, meaning you'll leave the centre pins - or even worse, a split! By releasing the ball with side-rotation bowlers can make the ball "hook" into the pins and drive through to carry the centre pins. Watch the video of the 8-10 split and you'll see the result of deflection.
This video clip will take a few minutes to load: when it does you'll see a ball hooking into the "pocket" to score a strike. You can also watch a video of a high-flare ball as it travels down the lane, see why a ball can hit the pocket but leave a ten-pin or compare this strike with a helicopter-style strike which uses deflection to score. Although this looks spectacular, and happens very fast, notice how the ball only touches four pins (sometimes only three), impacting with the front two pins (1-3 pocket for a right-hander) and then driving through to push the central 5-pin into the back-row 8-pin. Note here, however, the strong angle as the ball comes in hard from the far right of the lane - this is much more angle than can be achieved with a straight ball. |
