This video clip shows a big split, but one that the bowler makes. By ignoring the right hand pin and playing the "baby split" the bowler plays to take out the 7-pin with the ball and knows that the 2-pin will be pushed over with a chance of picking up the far side 10-pin.
This video clip will take a few minutes to load: when it does you'll see a ball be placed with pin-point accuracy convert this big split. You can also watch a video of a pocket-ball leaving a back-row split, see why the ten-pin spare is so common or watch a strike being made. Alternatively you can read articles describing simple lane-play and spare systems.

This shot shows how accuracy pays off, by placing the ball just to the left of the closest pin the ball deflects to take out the 7-pin (left hand corner) while pushing the first pin into the right hand corner for the 10-pin. It can be disappointing to leave a split like this and intimidating to try and make it, but with knowledge of some basic targetting systems your confidence in your ability to accurately target can be raised.
