By watching the two axis tracers drilled into this ball (white dots) you can see how the ball does not have a vertical axis of rotation but one tilted to the right which turns to the left just prior to impact.
This video clip will take a few minutes to load: when it does you'll see a 10lb Ebonite Maxim (polyester) ball strike by running down the side of the pins. Notice the axis tilt and how the ball carries significant deflection as it runs down the side of the pins, pushing the pins into each other.
