- A
Pro's Guide to Better Bowling - Vol I,
Don Johnson (1985,
53m)
Quite old now, but
contains some very good information. Don
uses a six-step programme to improve your
game by correcting common problem (timing,
swing etc.) and giving you strong
fundamentals, what he calls "assets".
Some good quotes: "you bowl best
when you think less", "if you
don't start right you can't finish right".
- A
Pro's Guide to Better Bowling - Vol II,
Don Johnson
Again, quite old, but I
found this an enlightening video when I
saw it for the first time. It explains in
a highly visual way how to find the "positive
axis" on your ball, how to
observe axis migration (watch a similar video clip here).
In the days of the "urethane release"
there are some excellent techniques
demonstrated for getting "more"
on the ball. Today, with reactive resin,
people seem more concerned with cutting
down on ball reaction!
- Maximum
Bowling, Marshall Hollman (45m)
Another oldie, but
fundamentally sound stuff. Could be
explained better, with a little too much
"jargon". Not for beginners.
Free arm swing is the message in this
video.
- Bowl your best game,
Earl Anthony (40m)
Assisted by Dick
Weber, Mike Aulby, Leila Wagner et al,
Earl discusses equipment (pre. reactives),
introduces mental imagery, adjusting to
conditions as well as the basic
fundamentals.
- The
Feelings of Bowling - Vol I, Dick Ritger
Demonstrates his seven practise
drills for teaching hook bowling. I
rate the techniques as excellent,
although Dick's presentation style is a
little dry. Dick's instruction methods
are designed to build "muscle
memory" and the positive "feelings"
of bowling. This is a good video for all
coaches who work with new bowlers and
would also be worth seeing before
attending one of Dick's bowling camps.
- The
Feelings of Bowling - Vol II, Dick Ritger
Here Dick demonstrates
his technique for "line bowling".
Shows you how to find a "personal
number" and dial-in drift to find
your starting position. Good stuff for
those not daunted by numbers - you may
have to watch it several times. USA
Bowling teach different methods ("walk
straight").
- The
Feelings of Bowling - Vol III: Perfecting
the Release, Dick Ritger
In the most recent volume
(1996) Dick shows how to get the feeling
of a good release. He doesn't talk about
familiar concepts (e.g. cupped and cocked
wrists), though the ideas of flicking a
ball with the fingers are the same. Dick
makes good use of learning aids (e.g.
coloured tape) & drill designed to
aid skill development..
- The
Master Plan to Great Bowling, Fred Borden
All good stuff, well presented. Nothing
really new here for more advanced bowlers
but would be a good video for someone
starting to take things more seriously,
more up to date than some of the others
on the market.
