Job
Electrical Engineering (Honors) graduate from Canterbury, registered (Telecoms) Engineer; working in a Test and Measurement/Process Control systems company. Translating (J-E)/technical writing in these fields also computers, electronics, and physics since about 1977. Copywriting of sales, advertising and marketing material and the occasional translating, rewriting, and editing of technical papers are the most challenging and enjoyable parts of the job. Have also translated/dubbed training videos.
Interests
I enjoy consulting and training in bilingual (E/J) computing Telecoms and Internet, Word Processing, Graphics and DTP and upgrading/troubleshooting PC and Mac software and hardware. I find that Internet telephony (such as with Net2Phone and e-Phone) is a good way to keep in touch with friends and relatives. I wish I had more time for browsing the Akihabara computer superstore area (two stops from Tokyo station), for travel (Osaka castle, and its surrounding parks and gardens, is worth a visit), going to hot springs like Arima Onsen (near Sannomiya, Kobe), hiking (Mitake-san near Tokyo, and Oze near Nikko, are favorites), visiting mountain temples like Yamadera (near Yamagata) and Sanzen-In (above Ohara, near Kyoto), listening to jazz standards (like when Hayasaka-san (sax) and Kuroda-san (piano) play together), chorus group concerts, Alistair Cooke's "Letter from America" BBC broadcasts in Real Audio, and reading. I recommend the following:
