In a previous chart the 100 top singles voted for by representatives of the music business were given. This time Mojo magazine asked its readers for their nominations. The results were taken from over 1000 replies. A very different chart emerged, nearly 60% of new entries with many English entries (Kinks, Who, Squeeze, Dexy's Midnight Runners, Smiths) giving an alternative to the trans-atlantic feel of the previous chart. As Mojo says the blockbusters and epics gave way to the heirs of George Formby and their kitchen-sink dramas.
It is interesting to note however that the top 3 from the first chart were in the top four of the readers chart.......
And what were the top ten all time singles judged by the 1000 readers? Here they are:-

The Shadows were represented in this version of the chart, APACHE was positioned at number 69. The only other instrumental was TELSTAR by the TORNADOS at number 79.
The Shadows entry was accompanied by a paragraph from somebody called Rob Bradford, who will no doubt be recognised by most Shads' fans for his writing and articles about the group.
He notes that the music was inspired by the eponymous Burt Lancaster film and Dmitri Tiomkin's DeGuello from The Alamo. Jerry Lordan wanted to reflect the nobility and savagery of the Indian. The Shads created a new sound. Partly it was the Fender guitars and Vox AC30 amps and that Hank had just aquired a Vox/Meazzi echo unit. The rest is history to all Shads' fans.
