Pete Townsend compliments Bruce as an excellent record producer but also as a guitarist with economical and beautiful style. Brian May says that Bruce created a perfect foil to Hank, creating a style of rythm playing.
Bruce in the early days
Bruce as we came to know himIt is said that Bruce was the perfectionist who drove the others to achieve what they did. Their music was simple-minded ( a complement from Steve Gray of Sky ?) initially technically unsophisticated but with an indefinable magic (Bert Weedon) which gave the fans exactly what they wanted. Big Bruce would strum an amazing rythm guitar, propelling along the whole thing which was underpinned by a superb rythm section (Eric Clapton - quoted in sleeve notes on the "Life In The Jungle" CD)
Bruce helped to restart Cliff's career by producing a number of albums beginning with "Nearly Famous" and together with Hank has written many hits for cliff individually and together. Two of Bruce's individual efforts are Please Don't Tease and I Love You.
Bruce's only single, "Please Mr Please" backed by "Song of Yesterday" did not make an impact on the charts but the easy, tuneful melodies with meaningful lyrics in a country and western style, make these two of my favourite songs. Both are now available on CD's.
