Gudauri

Gudauri is a ski resort in the Republic of Georgia, in the Caucasus Mountains approximately two hours drive from Tbilisi, situated 2000m above the valley of the river Aragva, on the former transcaucasian military road, north of Pasanauri.

Here in spectacular scenery, in the late eighties, the Austrians built the most modern ski resort in the then Soviet Union. As well as a large international style hotel complex there are 4 modern Doppelmayr chairlifts. There are a number of downhill runs, but the real attraction was the limitless heli-skiing provided by two Aeroflot Mi-8 helicopters. Full training in deep-snow skiing and avalanche training was given. Clientele were primarily German and Austrian with a few Russians.

The hotel also organized sight-seeing trips to Tbilisi and to other local attractions.

Sporthotel Gudauri could be reached on Gudauri 108, but that was in 1990, if anyone has an up-to-date number, please let me know.

The hotel/resort appeared in the Crystal ski holiday brochure for a few years until civil war broke out in Georgia.
