Spitfire's 68th birthday

First flight 5th March 1936

World wide there are about 50 flying examples of the Supermarine Spitfire, of the 200 or so that survive. The number of airworthy aircraft fluctuates as new specimens are restored to flying condition and others become none flying airframes. This flying example is based at Duxford, Cambridge UK.

• Imperial War Museum, Duxford, Cambridge. This is a preserved WW2 RAF station with a fine collection of aircraft, many of them still flying.

• RAF Museum, Hendon. The original Royal Air Force Museum containing a fine collection of aircraft, situated at Hendon, North London.

• RAF Museum, Cosford. The second Royal Air Force Museum, in Shropshire containing a collection of very interesting aircraft, early missiles and engines.

• Shuttleworth Trust, Old Warden, Bedfordshire. If you are interested in seeing flying examples of very early aeroplanes then the Shuttleworth Collection is a must.
