"Elementary Education Majors are required to learn to play the recorder. They use 'Recorder Teacher' and can use it when they go into schools to teach others."

"John: You have a real winner here. I teach recorder to 75 classroom teachers every semester and have wanted to find a better way especially for the more advanced and ambitious students. I have a feeling that you will be receiving a lot more orders. It would be nice to receive a site license so that I could set this up on several computers. I will be sharing this with my students beginning tomorrow. Happy Easter. Clark Bell. Florida Atlantic University Music Department."

A personal message to the author from the Ziff-Davis reviewer :-

    to John Child:

Just wanted to drop you a quick note to let you know how much I liked Recorder Teacher . . . I awarded it five stars.

I am primarily a string player (bass) myself, although I had and played a wonderful baritone recorder for a period of time; I can no longer play wind instruments due to a physical limitation.

I wade through many software programs each week and it is always a pleasure to encounter one that is both joyful and well-done.

And from a very special teacher :-

I have been practicing as a music teacher for some years in the norwegian primary school, teaching children aged 6-12 to play recorder, clarinet, guitar and piano. I find the recorder to be a very nice instrument, and also a most useful tool in developing childrens musical skills.

I am sure the children will have great benefits from this program. It shows them how to play the recorder, but it also to gives them experience with music notation and an opportunity to compose and write down their own melodies. Many other music notation programs are too complicated for children.

This program is so simple to use, it is not overloaded with too many choices and buttons. I really do like your "Tunes" window. Your selection of notation possibilities is very good. It prevents the children from being confused. At the same time they have sufficient tools to write melodies and to get a basic understanding of music notation.

About bar lines: In my opinion, it is an advantage that the children do not have to struggle with getting the bars right until they are familiar with the note lengths. One of the challenges by teaching children is, as far as I have experienced, to make the task so simple that they want to go on with it. They should be surprised and impressed by themselves, what they are able to learn. This I think you have achieved by your program. Thank you for developing such an excellent program!
