I am the SD linguist
Germany (like many other countries) is a country with many square dancers who do not speak english at all or not very good (besides others, of course).
Therefore it is hard for them to follow a workshop held in english or directional calls.
Many of these dancers want to train their abilities.
I have created a program to use a Windows-PC for that purpose by not only showing the words and expressions but also by speaking them
(at least when you have a sound card) including the possibility to choose the person who speaks.
Now I would like to fill the database with expressions that are used at workshops or as directional calls.
Therefore I would like to have the help of other interested square dancers and callers to collect words and expressions.
During phase 2 I would need people from different countries who would volunteer to speak all the words and expressions, either on a tape/cd or on a diskette (*.WAV).
Please help me and send me words and expressions you don't find in the list yet !
Please include the dance program and the context in which this expression is used.
International contacts
I also would like to have contact to people who can translate the program and it's contents into their language (swedish, japanese, dutch, ...?).
So please tell me if you would like to help me with that.
Which other countries can you think of where square dance is alive and the mother tongue is not english ?
Austria
Belgium
Danmark
Finland
France
Germany
Italy
Japan
Netherlands
Norway
Slowakia
Sweden
Switzerland
Tschechia
Categories
I will put the expresions into the following categories:
Basic
MS
Plus
Advanced
Challenge
Each of these will be separated into
Basic knowledge
Expert knowledge
Formations (= Formationen)
Additionally there will be the categories
Colloquialisms (= Umgangssprache)
There will be translations, explanations, examples and links to other expressions (like "similar to", "is used in", "is the opposite of", ...).
You can help me by not only sending me words and expressions but also categorizing these.
I will (up to now) not include expressions I assume to be too colloquial
or which are interesting only for C3/C4 dancers or for historical reasons.
