Turn One Analysis

Junker, with no engines doubled, was apparently trying to get his photons overloaded, avoid significant PPD damage, and save engine damage. His choice to do so was valid, but by maintaining speed 13 and moving away from the ISC, he helped to box himself into a corner. Sandy, on the other hand, kept coming at decent speed for a range 15 PPD shot. He was going to shoot the PPD on turn 1, regardless of range. Because the Orion did not double, he had no reinforcement to use against the PPD damage, and thus lost a few shield boxes in exchange for overloaded weapons. Advantage, ISC.

Turn 2 Analysis

Because of Junker's low speed on turn one, Sandy was able to maintain range and loop around, re-arming his PPD. Junker was not able to get the close-in strike that he wanted, as he spent the entire turn chasing Sandy. The ISC plasma, launched on 32 of turn 1, was real (to Junker's apparent surprise), and did 16 to the Orions's #2 shield. This would come back to haunt him in Turn 4. Sandy used a shuttle as good drone defense, and launched more plasma late in the turn to try and deter the Orion. Junker made the mistake of turning his weak #2 shield to the ISC, and leaving it there for the rest of the turn.

Analysis, Turn 3

Here, really, is where Junker lost the game. He overloaded his hellbore in energy allocation, which meant that he was definitely going on an attack run, but he only doubled one warp drive for extra power. I thought that was a definite mistake. If you're going on the attack, the Orion needs all the power he can muster. If he had 11-12 more power, the turn migt have gone very differently. His plans were certainly more complicated by Sandy's decision to 'star-castle.' (Definition for the uninitiated: Star Castle is to move slow, speeds 0-4, and use all your power for weapons and shields.) Sandy moved speeds of 3 and 4 the entire turn. Junker's choice was to go in through the G&F torps, then try to fight through more torps, weapons, and shield reinforcement, then try to do some damage, or break off the attack, run the torps out, and come back later. If he had had the extra power to reinforce a shield against the two existing torps, he might have succeeded on the attack. Failing that, he might have moved fast enough to run the torps out and then come back in for a close strike. Neither happened.

Junker did turn and run out the torps. His best bet at that point would probably have been to keep running, let the overloaded HB go dead, then spend a couple of turns re-arming. Basically, when your opponent star-castles, if you're not prepared to go in, then don't go in. Don't go in at all. Run away. But because of the oveloaded hellbore, Junker wanted to come back around. He fought to get to range 8 by the end of the turn. But where he really screwed up was in impulse 32. There were a lot of breaks leading up to the last impulse, and Junker got a little impatient. So on his last SOP, he asked for absolutely no break conditons, just fire all his weapons and go to the end of the turn. Thus, he did not get a break when Sandy launched the Wild Weasel.

In the long run, it made very little difference. The die rolls were so bad that none of the heavy weapons would have hit anyway. The net effect was to reduce 12 points of phaser damage to 4. But in the meantime, Junker took Sandy's second PPD blast on his 2 and 3 shield, further weakening the #2 shield.

And here is where everything finally falls apart. After firing all his overloads to no effect, the Orion decides (don't ask me why) to hang around and see what he can do with his phasers. (I can star-castle better than you!) He's got another F-torp coming at him, and Sandy has another G coming on line. Since Junker never found out if the G launched on Turn 2 was real, Sandy might have had two G torps, Junker didn't know. (In fact, the G launched on 2 was real, but Sandy still had the option of a fast-load from that launcher, which at close range is just as good. Junker's decision was based on two things: wild weasels. He had two in the bay, and figured that would be enough to absorb plasma damage while he wormed his way in to get a shot on 5.01. Still, however, he only doubled one warp drive, so his shield reinforcement was again low.

But, no plan survives first contact with the enemy. Junker started speed 8, hoping to draw out Sandy's plasma. Which he did, in the form of an enveloping G torp. Junker made his first mistake here. He waited for the F torp (launched on 3.32) to get to range 2, fired a couple of Ph-3s at it, then HETted to get more phasers on it before it hit. But his HET put him in a position that Sandy could hit him with the enveloper before he could weasel. Sandy recognized this and launched it immediately. (Had I been Sandy, I might have launched the fast-load a well. Junker was within range 5 and had a lot of spread-around shield damage. 20 points to the #6 followed by the enveloper would have left the Orion with no forward flank shielding. I think Sandy wanted to keep it and envelop it on turn 5, which was also a good plan. But Sandy could have won the game easily by taking down the #6 as well as the #2, then using his superior speed to get a shot on either down shield with all six phasers. Even if it were through a 2 shift, it would have been significant.)

Sandy also make a mistake here, in his SOP. With an Orion drone closing on him, he submitted the following SOP:

Impulse 6: Use 2 labs on drone d3.
           If type 1, fire ph-3 from shuttle and one ph-3 from ship, autokill.
           If unidentified, fire 2 phaser-3s from ship, autokill.

Of course, the error here is that there are no orders what to do if the drone IS identified and is NOT a type 1, which it was not. The drone took down Sandy's #3 shield, forcing Sandy to turn the following impulse. Junker fired a phaser, thinking that he was on the down shield. (I made the same mistake.) It plinked off the #2.

At this point, Junker has an enveloping G torp bearing down on him, he's slow, he's given up his movement advantage, and Sandy is going to be able to hurt him a little before the end of the turn. Sandy has lost a shield, but is in a position to keep it away from Junker for another turn or two, while the Orion picks up speed. By the time the Orion does pick up speed, the PPD will be back for a third and possible fourth shot, on already weak or missing shields. The game could have continued, but Junker knew it would be an uphill battle against a first-rate opponent. So he conceded.
