HR 1 was the first sanctioned on-line toruney in SFB history. It began in July of 1995, and will complete before the end of 1997. So it's not a QUICK way to win a Rated Ace card, but it is a fun tourney.
Initial pairings for the tourney were sent out in June, 1995. Round 1 was slated to run three months, July 1 to September 30, but a couple of late games caused a one month extension. Details on the Round 1 games are listed below, sketchy as they are.
Dragon had to withdraw early due to personal reasons, and GP Slayer flying an Andromedan Krait was substituted after being defeated by Firemane in HR 105. GP Slayer went on to win the battle against Watson with a decisive victory.
Junker won a hard-fought battle.
Late in their game Spencer had to withdraw. White Fang was advanced but withdrew himself before round 2.
The battle was intense, but a mistake by Sanchez and a clever tractor ploy by Tos allowed the Kzinti drones to decide the battle. Tos advanced.
A very close-fought game in which Slayer pushed Sandy's Hydran tp risk a second HET. The game was over in record time and Slayer was available to reenter the tourney and defeat Paul Watson in HR101.
The sizeof the smaller ship caught up with it at the end, and Warren was able to overwhelm Joe and advance to round 2.
The battle was intense as the Fed closed to get his shot. But when the Fed got to range four, he found he had too few remaining weapons. The ISC advanced.
These two combatants went head to head for four months. The battle was still inconclusive when the time limit expired, but due to withdrawals, there were openings for both in round 2.
Stephen withdrew for personal reasons as his Klingon D7 was mixing it up with the Fed TCC. Farsii advanced.
The FH was just no match for the double-overdrive Orion and his magical hellbores.
A close game in which both sides gave and took significant damage. It went to the time limit, and Hart was given the nod due to Lorimor's disappearance.
A long-running game, inconclusive after four months. Miller was advanced by judge's decision.
A four-turn rumble that finally ended with Hydran victorious. Koeck employed a strategy of strafe-and-run, but couldn't stop the Hydran from closing to range 1 in the end.
This was a 12 turn marathon game in which degradation was a major factor. The Andromedan resigned in what may be the most turns in a tourney PBEM duel. Initial damage was nearly equal, and both ships spent several turns trying to plink the other to death. The Kzinti's size eventually won out over the Andromedan PAs.
Farsi flew a nearly perfect game against Jim. Early turns went to Hart, as he stripped the Fed of shields but did no internals. The Chess match ended after extension with the Fed finally cornering the Gorn and doing him 30 internals as the time limit expired. Farsii advanced with the victory, but Hart also advanced due to the hard-fought game.
This game was quickly over, with the Gorn resigning after a failed initial battle pass.
Another fast-paced game, Crawford overwhelmed Junker's defenses and blew to victory.
Despite incredible pressure by Seeker forcing the Orion to attempt (and succeed at) an incredible FOUR HETs, dice and tactics favored the Orion, and Greg advanced.
Hemenway won this game after the Fed got a range 4 shot and hit with only 2 photons. Sandy then got behind the Fed and ate him alive.
The Andy came to range 2, and did not live long enough to regret it. A failed displacement left the Krait right where the Pirate wanted him.
Despite a poor bolt attempt from range 2, the Gorn was able to avoid the Kzinti drones long enough to turn things around, literally, and back into combat, running the Kzinti out of drones, then setting up an anchor attempt before the Great Cat gave up.
Drone duel. Tos caught Seeker against the edge of the map and proceeded to rip him to shreds. In his defense, Seeker's mind was elsewhere most of the game.
On turn 1, the two ships closed, with the Kzin launching his scatterpack and moving quickly while the Gorn plodded in at 17. Near the end of the turn, the Gorn launched plasma at the Kzin in such a way that the Cat would have to drop tracking to his drones to weasel.
But the Cat was smart. Using an early move and speed change, he was able to gain a hex on the plasma, as both ships slowed and weaseled their incoming seekers. (The Gorn plasma was pseudo.) The Gorn then sped up to 14 and closed on the Kzin, ending the turn at Range 1. Some good knife- fighting ensued on turn 3, but the Kzin was better suited to the task. The Gorn's atempt to anchor and destroy the Kzin failed, and Tos sailed into the finals with well-timed and well-planned drone, phaser, and disruptor fire.
Facing an Orion armed with HBs is a tricky job for the Lord Marshall. The Orion's power superiority plus speed mean that to win, the Hydran MUST get use out of his fusions. Hard to do against a ship that can run speed 31 and put up 20 reinforcement. So, Sandy's first step was to try and blunt some of the Orion's power advantage. On the off-chance the Orion would risk doubling everything and charging in, the Hydran plotted a speed that would allow him to run to the corner and avoid overload range completely. The pirate DID double everything, and when he realized what was happening, wisely broke off -- ending the turn in a different time zone, down two warp, and forced to start re-arming his HBs. After two more positioning turns, the two finally reached range 8 on impulse 32 of turn 3. The Orion killed both Stingers, while losing 28 boxes off his #2 shield. Each ship only fired ONE of its HBs, though.
As turn 4 began, the Orion got his 3rd drone out, and the TLM responded by launching a pair of shuttles. As the two danced, the TLM took out all three drones, using two suicide shuttles and 2 ph3 bursts. After dancing for half the turn, the Orion HETed to get a range 5 oblique shot at the TLMs #1 shield. The Hydran responded with his own phaser/fusion alpha, knocking the Orion #6 shield down to 7 boxes. Then the Hydran missed with his HB! The TLM turned and ran while the Orion headed the opposite direction. The TLM ran as best he could, but doubling everything, the Orion HETed and chased for all he was worth. The TBR finally got into range and fired his OL-HB, missing at range 4 on impulse 28 of turn 5. The TLM then turned IN!? toward the Orion. Having a chance to gain the Hydran's 1 box #1 shield, the Orion slipped to allow the ships to center-line each other on impulse 32. The TLM took 30 ints from the Orion phasers, while the TLM managed to take down the #1 shield of the TBR and did 18 ints to the Orion. Looking at 3 OL-fusions, 3-ph1s and an OL-HB on impulse 1, the Orion conceded, knowing he couldn't survive the 50-60 ints he was certain to take.

It began a great time ago, a duel between a Hydran and a Zinti. It continues even now.
On the first turn, The Zinti came out fast with speeds of 20 and then 31. He launched his SP early and closed in. The Hydran moved out cautiously at speed 14 and late in the turn speed up to 26.
The Zin SP blossomed on 1.19 but the Zin was far ahead of the drones at that point. Towards impulse 25 the two ships closed to ranges 4 and the zinti cut loose on the stingers while the Hydran cut loose on the Zinti.
The Zinti lost his #5 shield to phaser and hellbore fire and took 13 internals which included 2 disr. He turned in on the Hydran but failed in a tractor attempt. He blew past the hydran and the turn ended with dead stingers and a hurt Hydran.
Turn 2 saw both ships HET to come back at each other. Another failed tractor attempt allowed the Hydran to slip behind the zinti and use gatling and fusion fire to hurt the rear zinti shield. The Hydran used ED and WW to flush off the zinti drones that we bearing down. This allowed the slow moving zinti to line up a shot on impulse 24 at range 2 which dropped a shield and did internals to the Hydran. A zinti shuttle also fired on 32 taking out the hellbore.
Turn 3 saw both side fire on impulse 1. The zinti 3 overload disr salvo missed badly gaining only 1 hit while the Hydrans hellbore worked over the zinti's power but left the disr intact. The two ships both began moving backward and thats where we stand with the two cagey opponents backing off warily..
