3.4 DANCE MAILING LISTS

DANCERS ARCHIVE WEBSITE

The Country & Western Dance List

To subscribe, please email: majordomo@world.std.com with the following line in the BODY: subscribe cw-dance

If you ever want to remove yourself from this mailing list, send mail to cw-dance-request@world.std.com with the following command in the body of your email: unsubscribe

Or you can send mail to Majordomo@world.std.com with the following command in the body of your email message: unsubscribe cw-dance your_name your_email_address

The Line Dance List

Please NOTE: The Line Dance list has changed ownership from danrarch@world.std.com to bjbrown@world.std.com as of Nov 9, 1996.

The Line Dance List is a public electronic mailing list for distribution and discussion of line dances. This includes at least the following dance types/styles:

If you're not sure this list covers your dance type, please feel free to email the list.

Possible topics include, but are not limited to, teachers, music, videos, books, history, the future of the various dances, technique, etc.

Anyone can join the list by sending e-mail to majordomo@world.std.com with a "subscribe line-dance" command (without the quotes) in the body of the message.

(You can subscribe a local redistribution list or a gateway to a local newsgroup, as long as whatever you do is local to your site. Be sure to email me , describing what you plan to do, before you do this, to make sure there won't be any problems.)

Because the list is moderated, your posts to the list may take anywhere from several hours to several days to get mirrored back to you, so please be patient.

Please follow these minimal guidelines to reduce the workload of the moderator:

- Don't submit copyright-protected works, unless you have written
permission from the copyright-owner (and include a statement to that
  effect).

- Be aware that this is an international list with the potential for
  members from many countries.

- Regarding the "Subject:" field of your message:
 a. If your post contains an actual dance description, the subject
line should contain the name of the dance, or as close to it as
    possble.
 b. In all other posts, make the subject line as explicit a 1-line
description of the content of your message as you can.

- Submitters are responsible for the content and appropriateness of
  all mailings to the list.

- Use good taste and common sense! This is a common resource for all
  to enjoy.

- Above all, enjoy communicating with your fellow dancers, and feel
free to mail any message to the list that follows the above
  guidelines!

- Regarding the Archiving of messages:
 a. The FAQ (list of Frequently Asked Questions) is stored as at least
forty files in the directory path:
    /ftp/nonprofits/dance/CW-dance/LD-FAQ/ under filenames starting
    with 'LD-FAQ-'.
 b. You may also find items of interest in the CW-dance, books, videos,
and music directories directly under the dance directory where
appropriate. This is a part of Dancers' Archive and is available
via ftp, gopher and WWW as well as email.
The line-dance list will not be gatewayed anywhere because of the difficulty in doing so and also because it is moderated and none of the appropriate "target" newsgroups is moderated. Gatewaying something moderated to something that's not means that the two means of accessing the posts would get out of sync at some point and it'd be confusing.

To send mail to the list (i.e a message to all the people currently subscribed to the list), just send mail to line-dance@world.std.com. Your email goes to one address, where the post gets moderated, and Majordomo makes copies for all the people who've subscribed. That address is also called the "list address". It can take from a few hours to a few days for people on the list to receive the message, because of the moderation process. After Oct. 8, posters will receive a confirmation message that their message was received by the list processing software and forwarded to the moderator.

Please don't send a command to line-dance@world.std.com; it might get sent to all the list members. All commands should go to majordomo@world.std.com. If you can't get your command to work, please email me at owner-line-dance@world.std.com to see if the problem can be fixed. It's very important to note the difference between these addresses and line-dance@world.std.com, since list members can get annoyed if you send commands meant for Majordomo to the entire list!

For more information about majordomo commands, put "help" in the body of a message (without the quotes) and send it to majordomo@world.std.com.

If you ever want to remove yourself from this mailing list, send an
email to line-dance-request@world.std.com
with the following line in the body: unsubscribe

Or you can send mail to Majordomo@world.std.com
with the following command in the body of your email message:
unsubscribe line-dance

or from another email account other than your own:
unsubscribe line-dance (your email address)

If you ever need to get in contact with the owner of the list, (if you have trouble unsubscribing, or have questions about the list itself) send email to . This is the general rule for most mailing lists when you need to contact a human.

Using DANCERS ARCHIVE "HELP", "GET" & "FIND" COMMANDS

HELP COMMAND

To get the help file re lists and associated information held at the dancers archive (graphics, line dance FAQ, etc) simply email: dancers-archive@world.std.com

with the following in the SUBJECT line: help cw-dance

GET COMMAND

You can also access the files at Dancers Archive via email. Please NOTE that the word 'get' is required. Please also note that Directory & file names are case sensitive!

For more information on the "GET" command, email: dancers-archive@world.std.com

with the following in the SUBJECT line: get help/get-cmd

FIND COMMAND

A "FIND" command is available to search the CW-dance directory. For more information on this command, email: dancers-archive@world.std.com

with the following in the SUBJECT line: get help/find-cmd

The 'find' command is not too intelligent and really doesn't do anything different for one directory or another. That is, it currently doesn't have any 'set' of keywords to look for in a specific directory, so you could just as easily search for anything you want. Please take NOTE:

1.that if a 'header' is continued on the another line, only the first line is going to be listed. That may be fixed at a later date.
2.If the phrase you're searching for isn't in a dance's file, that filename is not going to be listed.
3.Commands must be in the SUBJECT line. The Body is ignored.
4.If no command is in the SUBJECT line, the email will be ignored.
5.Only one command per email is allowed.
6.No wildcards are allowed in a command.
7.The word 'find' (w/o quotes) is required.
8.Spelling is important, but case of characters is not. This is slightly different than the 'get' command.

Thanks

Eileen Bauer
danrarch@world.std.com owner emeritus line-dance
for BJ Brown owner-cw-dance@world.std.com

Country & Western Dancing in Ontario Mailing List

cwdance-ont-l@interlog.com:

This mailing list was started on March 15, 1996. The focus of this mailing list is the Country and Western dance scene in Ontario. However, everyone is welcome, be they in Ontario, elsewhere in Canada, or anyplace in the world.

The list is open to dancers, instructors, and supporters. If you feel there is a need for a forum for dance instructors, we can canvas the subscribers to see how many would be interested.

Issues specific to Ontario can be discussed here, without clogging up the international mailing lists.

How to SUBSCRIBE to cwdance-ont-l:
Send the following message
SUBSCRIBE cwdance-ont-l
to majordomo@interlog.com

How to UNSUBSCRIBE from cwdance-ont-l:
Send the following message
UNSUBSCRIBE cwdance-ont-l
to majordomo@interlog.com

For those new to internet mailing lists, a short explanation: this list is a service offered by my Internet Service Provider (ISP), Internex Online Inc, of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

An internet mailing list gives the simulation of an open discussion group, but all messages flow as private email.

If you send a message to the list, everyone who subscribes to the list will receive a copy of the message. If you send a message to an individual, only that individual will see the message.

Personal messages and personal replies should be sent to an individual and NOT to the whole list. Otherwise, it might annoy other cwdance-ont-l subscribers. Obviously, replies of general interest should be send to the entire list.

cwdance-ont-l is currently an unmoderated list. Any postings are automatically accepted. Subscribers are encouraged to support cwdance-ont-l actively within their own organizations and personal or professional networks. The larger the number of subscribers to cwdance-ont-l becomes, the more useful it will be to all its subscribers.

To send a message to all the people currently subscribed to the list, just send mail to cwdance-ont-l@interlog.com. This is called "sending mail to the list", because you send mail to a single address and majordomo makes copies for all the people who have subscribed. This address [cwdance-ont-l@interlog.com] is also called the "list address".

You must never try to send any command to that address, as it would be distributed to all the people who have subscribed, rather than treated as a command.

All commands must be sent to the "majordomo address", majordomo@interlog.com. It is very important to understand the difference between the two, but fortunately it is not complicated.

The majordomo address is like a FAX number, and the list address is like a normal phone line. If you make your FAX call to someone's regular phone number by mistake, it will be an unpleasant experience for them, but you will probably be excused the first time. If you do it regularly, however, they will probably get upset and send you a nasty complaint. It is the same with mailing lists, with the difference that you are calling hundreds or thousands of people at the same time, so a lot more people get annoyed if you use the wrong number.

More information on majordomo commands can be found by sending the command HELP to majordomo@interlog.com. There are several commands available, including a list of all subscribers.

For further information about cwdance-ont-l, please send an e-mail to the list owner:

3.7 FAQ's & OTHER DANCE DATABASE INFORMATION

THE LINE/C&W DANCE & MUSIC FAQ

All releases of the Line Dance FAQ will be made available through the dancers-archive email server using a simplified method. To get all the sections of the FAQ using only one message, email:

dancers-archive@world.std.com

with the following SUBJECT line: get LD-FAQ

The word 'get' is required (w/o quotes). LD-FAQ may be entirely in upper case or entirely lower case, but not in mixed case. If you'd like to get it via ftp, you can ftp to:

ftp://ftp.std.com/nonprofits/dance/CW-dance/LD-FAQ/

Everything in that directory will be part of the FAQ, regardless of the name. All subsequent versions of the LD FAQ will be in this location, although the exact number & names of the files may differ. All subsequent versions of the LD FAQ will be retrievable using the one command shown above. This command must be sent to:

dancers-archive@world.std.com

in order for it to work. When the server receives the command, it will reply with one FAQ section per email, so currently it will reply with 32+ emails, each of them containing one section of the FAQ.

If there are any questions about this, please email Eileen Bauer: ecb@world.std.com

UK C&W DANCE DATABASE

Maintained by (Doc) Scott Owens. Intermediate/Advanced Class Teacher, Prairie Dogs C&W Line Dance Club, Manchester, UK.
E-Mail: scottie@prdogs.u-net.com

Due to the nature of C&W dancing in the UK, most of the entries are for teaching clubs as most of the social dancing is organised by the teaching clubs - there are few dedicated bars and clubs for C&W.
