KIM (
KIWIS IN MONTREAL ) Founded
by Sally
and Chico Wallis in 1979,
with the purpose of bringing together New Zealanders in the
Montreal, QC. Canada, area. Sally originally from Christchurch was homesick and wanted to meet other New Zealanders. They have organized many activities, in these
past few years, where the members of the group and their families
could enjoy some of the traditions from home. Usually on the
first week-end of August we have had the opportunity to enjoy a
Hangi at the Long Sault Parkway, west of Cornwall in Ontario. As
a rule the Hangis have been officiated by Ted Rudolph who has applied his long experience in
organizing such events according to true Maori tradition. During
these gatherings the New Zealand flag was always proudly displayed thanks to the
Wallis family members. On some occasions the Maori concert party
performed traditional Maori
dances.
Other events have been supper gatherings mainly at Fritz Farm in Baie d'Urfe, on the occasion of Waitangi Day, and these have been held on the first Saturday of February. The national Anthem was sung at the start of every such evening.
