Gnaarl's Den : Lyran HomeWorld Lyran Rated Ace at Origins 91 (Patrol) After flying the Hydran in the Captain's Tournament and getting knocked out in the second round, by random selection I flew the Lyran in the Patrol tournament. Here is my chronology: Patrol Battle 1: Win vs Fed (non-ace) Don't remember much except he fired at range 8 twice (3/8 hits with overloads). After second salvo, I HET'd and killed him. Patrol Battle 2: Win vs Orion (Dis*3,Ph-1,Ph-1???) I killed him by the first few impulses of turn two. Yes, he was a new-be. Patrol Battle 3: Win vs Kzinti (non-ace) We sabre-danced for awhile, and for some unknown reason, I never saw his scatterpack until the very end. Patrol Battle 4: Win vs Andro (west coast player, probably an ace) I reinforced my #1 shield with ESGs up at range 3 and he shot at it. After a few turns of chasing him, he failed a displacement into a wall. Ouch! Patrol Battle 5: Loss vs Klingon (Tom Carroll, defending champion) After totally psyching myself out at the realization of play "Tom Carroll", I proceeded to play one of my worst SFB games in memory. We talked afterward and he told me to relax and wished me luck. A few years later, he told me that was the only Patrol game he played that year. Patrol Battle 6: Win vs Rom Firehawk (Chris Mazza, current Hydran Ace) Chris is an awesomely unpredictable player. This battle is the only one where I have ever been hit by three suicide shuttles, 2 on the nose! Grueling plasma ballet early. Cornered Chris and after questions about his suicide shuttles with a judge, I did just enough damage to prevent him from cloaking out. Very close game. My 5-1 record earned me a place into the Patrol Winner's Bracket. PWB Battle 1: Win vs NeoTholian (Russ Schaeffer) Eventually he ran out of power and forward shields. PWB Battle 2: Win vs Fed (Don Clarke) He only hit with 1/4 OL photons at range 4. PWB Battle 3: Loss vs Orion (Ph-Gs)(Ron Spitzer) I messed up by marking 2 shuttle hits on the same bay or else Ron takes another 18 game deciding internals. The first ever sighting of the Stinger Orion. Ron Spitzer is one of the best players I have ever played. PS: Speed and Power is Life Robert Estrada
