Configuring Outlook Express 5.0 using IMAP
for Macintosh


This handout is a comprehensive set of instructions to configure Outlook Express 5.0 to work with Macintosh Computers.

PLEASE NOTE! THE SCREEN SHOTS HAVE BEEN 'BORROWED' FROM ANOTHER WEB SITE. THE CORRECT SETTINGS FOR YOUR COMPUSERVE 2000 ACCOUNT ARE GIVEN IN THE TEXT INSTRUCTIONS.


Connecting to the Internet

Before you can check your e-mail, you must be connected to the Internet. Start your Compuserve 2000 program and connect in the usual way to do this. Then run your Outlook Express program.

What is IMAP?

IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is a standard protocol for accessing e-mail from your local server. E-mail is received and held for you by your local server, in this case Compuserve.

Getting Started


  1. Launch Outlook Express by double-clicking on it's icon.
  2. If the Internet Connection Wizard does not appear, go to the Tools menu and choose Accounts. The Internet Accounts window will appear. (Fig. 1)
  3. Click on the New Button on the top left of the window.

  1. The Account Setup Assistant will appear. (Fig 2)
  2. Type in your name and click the blue Right arrow to continue.

  2. The Internet E-mail Address window appears (Fig. 3). Click the radio button next to "I already have an e-mail address that I'd like to use."
  3. Type in your e-mail address and click the blue right arrow to continue. Your Compuserve 2000 email address will be username@cs.com eg. inoble3246@cs.com

  1. The E-mail Server Names window appears. (Fig. 4). Choose IMAP from the Incoming mail server drop down menu.
  2. Type in imap.cs.com as the Incoming Mail server.
  3. Type in smtp.cs.com as the Outgoing mail server and click the blue right arrow to continue.

  1. In the Internet Mail Logon window (Fig. 5), type your Compuserve user name in lowercase letters next to Account ID. Your user name is the first part of your e-mail address before the @ sign. For example, inoble3246@cs.com would be inoble3246.
  2. Type your Password. Only check the Save password box if your computer is secure from other people accessing your e-mail. Click the blue right arrow to continue.

  1. The Congratulations window will appear (Fig. 6). Type in an Account name and click the Finish button. You are done configuring Outlook Express for your IMAP account on Compuserve 2000.

You are now ready to use your e-mail. When you want to check your e-mail, click on the Send & Receive button in the toolbar (Fig. 7).  If you have any problems, please post a message in the Email & Communications Forum on Compuserve (GO word EMAILCOM)
