The WEMA Minimat 65 small components lathe uses the latest German technology, allowing very quick and
precise set-up with pre-programmed operations already installed within the central computer panel. The most
important feature is that the finishing tool has a two stage operation which speeds up production rates
considerably. The lathe will accept squared timber up to 800mm in length but shorter machines can be built
to order. This is a marvelous machine for really fast production of small items up to 65mm in diameter and
turning rates of over 1,000 items per hour can be achieved on small diameter pieces. The operation of the lathe is as follows:
Once the square timber is loaded into the hopper it is raised to the central position on the lathe where the appropriately sized holding chuck moves along from the tailstock end until it grips and revolves the timber. The workpiece is now moved towards the headstock via a guide ring where the roughing guage rounds it so that the wood passes through the ring steadily and appears as a cylinder on the other side. An optical measuring guage allows only the exact length to come through the steady where the first cutting operation with a roughing tool takes place. The appropriately shaped tool then takes a single cut or double cut to form the exact shape. Should any boring be necessary this then takes place before the parting knife comes across to cut the finished turning from the stock and so the operation continues. All these operations are controlled by the computer with programming taking only a short time.
