Lesson 7
A single light

Objective
Shoe advertising. Create a graphic image which depends on shape for impact.

- A large bank light is used to ensure soft wraparound
shadows.
- Black velvet is used as the background. The model simply lies on the
velvet. Black seamless will not reproduce as black in this lighting set-up.
- The dress was laid out carefully to ensure there was enough 3-dimensionality
to result in shadows.
- The small photo is a 4x5" Polaroid placed in position at shooting time.
The photograph has not been manipulated or retouched.
Lighting
- #1 A single bank light, positioned about 4 feet above the model and slightly
to the right to provide shadows. f8
Cool Trick!
Generally you can not get a dense black from seamless paper (if it receives the
same amount of light as the subject). Simply look at the paper and you will
see that it is not as black as the densest black in a photograph.
When using black velvet to create a dense black, it is important that the fabric
not have creases and wrinkles. Although black velvet absorbs light, the creases
will reflect more brightly than the surrounding velvet. You will see these
brighter areas on your photograph.
