URI Final Exam Schedule

 Class Policies

Semester Exams: Four (4) exams will be administered over the course of the semester.  Each student is permitted to drop the lowest score among the four exams.  Alternatively, a student may choose to skip (not take) one exam.  At the end of the semester, three exam grades will be counted.  In the case where a student has taken all four exams, the exam with the lowest score will be administratively dropped.

Final Exam: The final exam is the last exam of the term. The exam will be administered on the last day of class. The purpose of this exam is to examine how well each student can synthesize the total content of the course.

Missed Exams:  A doctor's note or similar document is required. A note from Mom is not enough. The instructor reserves the right to assign zero (0.0) points to any late or missing assignment.  Make-up exams will only be given for a valid and documented reason.  A missed make-up exam will result in the assignment of zero (0.0) points.

Financial Statement Analysis: the purpose of the project is to provide the student with an opportunity to develop a financial statement analysis of a listed industrial company.  Due to data limitations, the project is restricted to firms available on the URI subscription to the COMPUSTAT database tapes.  This is a group project.  NOTE: Oral presentation of the analysis is required.  Late projects will be penalized between 5 and 15 points.  Based on one or several factors the professor will determine the level of penalty.  The factors shall include but not be limited to: number of days (weeks) late, overall presentation, and reason for being late.

Group Policies:  The instructor will assign each student to a group.  This is generally a very gut-wrenching process for students as there are bound to be preferences.  Fortunately, the goal of the professor is expediency - not friendships or any other criteria.  Hence, the assignment by the professor is final.  In the case where a group becomes dysfunctional, the students are requested to bring this matter to the professor for resolution.

Computer Requirements: FIN 301 requires all enrolled student to obtain familiarity with the Internet as it is installed at all URI supported computing installations. Software, class notes, assignments, and the course syllabus are all available 24 hours per day via the Internet. Additionally, each student is expected to know how to both send and receive electronic mail. These services are available to all students as part of the computer fee.

Grades:  As each assignment is graded and returned, the Dash Electronic Grade System will be available for 24/7 accesses to your individual grade record.  Simply go to the  Current Semester Grade File to view your grade.  You will need your student ID number (new unique number - not your SSN) to gain access to your record.

Grade of Incomplete (I):  This is NOT an option because you may fail to complete assigned materials.  The use of this grade is governed by URI policy.  In short, you must have a valid excuse (medical, death, etc.) AND, you must be passing the class.  Simply being to busy to complete your work is not a valid reason for the use of this grade.

Grade Inquiries:  All grade inquires must be made by email request.  Additionally, if you have a question about a graded assignment you must request a review within seven (7) days of the return of the graded assignment.  Stated differently, after seven days, the grade on an assignment is no longer open for review.

Professionalism: Students are expected to conduct themselves professionally in all matters related to this class.  This means students should act professionally in class and prepare all assignments in a professional manner.  Inappropriate verbal comments directed toward others in class and/or inappropriate written comments in assignments will not be tolerated.  Cell phones and pagers should be turned off during class. If possible, in an emergency situation, please let me know before class that your phone or pager may go off.  Unless otherwise noted, written assignments should by typed or word processed and be free of spelling and grammatical errors.

URI Civility Policy:  Teachers at the University of Rhode Island are committed to developing and actively protecting a class environment in which respect must be shown to everyone in order to facilitate and encourage the expression, testing, understanding, and creation of a variety of ideas and opinions.  Rude, sarcastic, obscene, or disrespectful speech and disruptive behavior have a negative impact on everyone's learning.  Please note that when a person disrupts the class in these ways, the course instructor will have the disruptive person removed from the class.

Why is email such a big deal?  Email communication provides two-sided objective documentation.  When an email is sent a copy is created in the OUT folder of your mail client.  Hence, you have dated and timed documentation as to when a delivery was made.  In the event of a dispute you only need to forward a copy of the email - the copy will include the header information which shows the original transmission date.  Do not loose the contents of your OUT folder.
