Gene Catlow's Musty Old Archive
Gene Catlow's Musty Old Archive
This little corner of the Web was an out-of-the-way spot to hold the artistic backlog of Gene Catlow. It was to keep his EarthLink site from getting too crowded.
It has now overloaded its file limit. The archive continues at:
His original homepage is still located at:

Gruff Raccoon reminds his daughter Observant of something very important.
Observant nods vigorously, assuring her father she does remember.
Dept. Entry #2
Barclay "Bigfella Machine" Johnson, in his description of his New West scenario,
created an image of a rather disreputable buzzard reading a newspaper while perched upon
a carcass. In the continuation of their e-mail conversation, I offered this picture
of a more refined 'vulture with culture'.
Dept. Entry #3
You may recall the e-mail conversation referred to last time, in which Gene created
a refined 'vulture with culture in contrast to the Bigfella Machine's deadly denizens of
the New West. Here the two opposing ends of the spectrum meet, as the refined avian strays
across his buzzardly brethren doing what scavengers do so well...

Here is a scan of a commission made for Bill Redfern, co-creator & illustrator of Haul Trek,
an irrepressably funny chronicle of the misadventures of StarFleece officer M'Iskiti and her
compatriots... and in case you haven't seen it, that well-known hatchling of The Great Bird
of the Galaxy is basted to a golden brown in this comic. :) If you have indeed been so
misfortunate as to have missed it, remedy your ailment by checking out "HAUL TREK:
The Misadventures of M'Iskiti" at http:www.haultrek.com

This is a section of a larger picture done some time ago as a commissioned set of
illustrations for one of my first fans, Hudson Bates. His character, Burlington, is a
unique breed of mephit called a snowskunk. Two things make them unique: One, the absence
of the usual striped markings that skunks have. A snowskunk has pure white fur. (Note:
they are NOT albino skunks, but an actual species unto themselves) and
Two: the ability to alter their scent in many powerful and dangerous ways. The more highly
trained snowskunks can emit a scent that can kill their intended victim. In Hudson's story,
he was one of these skilled mephits. This is a small detail from my illos, since Hudson was
(and is) very careful about where he wants his characters to be seen. Burlington is (c)
Hudson Bates.
Dept. Entry #6
You will recall that mention has twice before been made of Barclay Johnson's
New West stories, in which some extremely disreputable buzzard gents display a harsh
evolution of their natural scavenging instincts. Well, the New West being what it is,
what might be one's next uneasy suspicion is realized here, as the vengeful vultures
graduate from the 'letting their victim expire first' school of thought to the 'helping
the demise along a little bit' mindset. Harsh creatures in a harsh world...

This is a very rare posting for this site... it is one of the
little pics that CatsWhisker and I draw for each other in our e-mails! Normally they
are only seen by CW and myself, but this one has been "okayed" by her for everyone
else to view. ;) Recently, I was asked by Trixi to draw what the married couple
of Mr. & Mrs. Catlow would look like. Actually, in the stories CW and I collaborate on,
our characters really will be mated one day, so Trixi's request was quite well-timed.
My lady cat wanted to know which one of us would be more likely to give our newborn
kitten his feeding in the wee hours. This was the pic I drew for her. I perhaps could
have posted it on Yerf, but I'd rather just be sure and post it here. ;)
Dept. Entry #8
Once again, this is one of the special pictures that CatsWhisker and I draw
for each other... we have really been working on our e-mail story of the married
couple of Mr. & Mrs. Catlow. I am very sure I would behave just exactly like this
in real life. Hopefully one day I'll find out... :)
Dept. Entry #9
This is a pic I did for Jamie Malecki of his Capyz characters. I played
Carl Douglas's 1974 "(Everybody was) Kung Fu Fighting" while I drew this. :)
Dept. Entry #10
Another picture for Jamie Malecki... He likes to send file attachments to
artists, and I don't mind getting his art. :) But sometimes... he gets a little
overenthusiastic. When he send me attachments that are 2,419 MEGS BIG... I have
to ask him to hold off a bit!

Here's one of my better pencil sketch of the Raccoon Kids, done for a
comission piece. :)
Dept. Entry #12
This was just a little Raccoon Kids pic I sent to cheer up Catnel, who had the
blues recently. :)
Dept. Entry #13
There will soon be a Bits & Pieces story, which will tell what happened to
one of the other kids seen in the first Raccoon Kids picture. This is a sneak preview...
Her name may not be known for awhile, so she will simply be referred to as "the Quiet One."
:)
Dept. Entry #14
This is a scan of a sketch I sent to a friend via snail-mail on the subject of
the general condition of where we both live. (He's immaculately neat and tidy.) I
described my place as one where I know exactly where everything is (and I do). All
my things are in stacks and piles in which I can find anything. It just isn't neat. <:)
Dept. Entry #15
This is a pic I did for my good friend BreeAnn Barlow, of her character Sarah
Brookhalter. :)
Dept. Entry #16
This is a reference sheet for a character that will appear in a future Raccoon Family story.
Most people already know that the members of the Raccoon Family have some rather unusual abilities.
What you might not know is that they aren't the only ones who do. And some of those
others are not so nice...
Dept. Entry #17
In the time-space continuum created by Barclay Johnson, most of the Capellans
you meet are realy nice people. A very, very small percentage of them are not so
nice. One in particular is about as far away from B-Artisan as you can get. He is
a particularly evil assassin called T-Killer. Stay as far away from him as you can.
IF you can. :/
Dept. Entry #18
This is another pic I did for the wonderful BreeAnn Barlow, of her character Cassie
(who by an unusual series of events has become a grown-up! O_O)
Dept. Entry #19
This is a pic I did for my friend Karl, based on a rendering he did of his
character, Attic Rat, as a superhero. :)
Dept. Entry #20
This is a pic I did for Jamie of his characters in 50's style costume. :)
Dept. Entry #21
This is a request picture which was never claimed. A fan of my art asked me for
this rendition of a rather unusual (to say the least) lupine. But I never heard from him
again...
Dept. Entry #22
This is a picture done at a recent TrixiCon. I haven't drawn many of my Furriston
characters in anything but their usual accoutrements. The sketch I did of Joleen Lynxen
looked too nice just to leave as a sketch, so I gave it the full graphic treatment. I like
the way it came out. :)
Dept. Entry #23
This is a inked-color-and-background-added rendition of one of mu design
drawings I did for a Star Trek fanfiction story. The Morrit are a very formal
species, given to elaborate customs and formality. When a Morrit becomes an
officer in Starfleet, they are never again seen out of uniform, even when off
duty or on shore leave!
Dept. Entry #24
This is another of the drawings I did about the Morrit species. These
two are, as usual, in their most formal dress. A mother is presenting her son
in one of their elaborate family ceremonies.
Dept. Entry #25
When Gabriel Gentile started e-mailing me again, I sent him an updated
pic of his old character. (Before he changed it.) I don't know what SpookyBunny
looks like, but I had fun with Gabe. :)
Dept. Entry #26
This is a little pic I sent in response to a fan letter from an artist who is
considering starting a webcomic of his own. You can see the image he sent to me that
prompted this pic on my Keenspot comic fan art site. :)
Dept. Entry #27
Just one of the pics I did at ConiFur NW 2001, where I got to meet Karma
iRL for the first time! She and Pepe were very gracious, and I had a lot of fun.
I wish I could show you the pic they drew for me, but it would have to go on a
more secure location than here. <:)
Dept. Entry #28
This is a pic I did for Jamie of his characters as ancient Canovians. Jamie
certainly seems to enjoy the style of that period in the history of Furriston's
world. :)
Dept. Entry #29
Last year I was talking at length to MelSkunk on the phone, and she was
wondering how I could spend so much time with her chatting and still be able to
do all the other things I needed to do. When it comes to keeping in touch with
my friends, I can multitask. :)
