The Tomb of Hi Jolly
December, 2001
Haj Allaih was a camel driver hired for the US Army's "pack camel" experiment
in the mid-1800's. The experiment was a failure (camels are ill-tempered,
obnoxious beasts) and the camels were released into the wilds of the US Southwestern
desert. "Hi Jolly", as he was called, stayed in America the rest of
his life, eventually making his last camp in Quartzite, Arizona. There
he could watch for any remaining camels, holding true to his charge.
