I went out to visit my sister last summer. We get along a lot better now that we're 2000 miles apart. It was nice to see her.
One evening we went out to the seashore to see the beach and my sister picked up a rock and gave it to me as a gift. She thought it was a little joke, I mean, who gives a rock? It was just a rock she picked up off the ground. Well, actually it was a rather interesting rock. It was rounded by having been pounded on by the waves and scoured by sand. But it wasn't completely featureless, it still had a few centuries of polishing before that happened. It was lumpy in one area and there was a kind of crease where the sand couldn't get in to polish so that it was still a bit rough. It was very dark, almost back, and smooth grained. I'm not quite sure what kind of mineral it is. It might be basalt or granite.
So, I thought it was an interesting rock and I carefully packed it to go home and when I got back I called my friend Sharon and asked her to cage it for me. That means she took some silver wire and wrapped it around it so it couldn't slip out and then put a little bit of ribbon on it so I could wear it around my neck.
Turns out the rock is a little bit heavy for jewelry, and I'm not much of a jewelry wearing kind of person, but I took a picture and sent it to my sister to show her I appreciated her gift.
Here is a link to Sharon's showcase of caged rocks Sharon's caged stones. Most of Sharon's work uses more colorful and ornamental stones, but I like the sentimental rock my sister picked up on the beach for me.
