Writing Out a Speech

There are times when it is desirable to write out a speech verbatim (word for word). This can be a method to stay within very tight time limits.

If you are writing out a speech there are somethings you can do to make it more readable.

Computer technology is a wonderful thing. A laser printed print out can be much more readable than a typed or especially a hand written script. And it is easier to edit when you are adjusting your timing.

Print double spaced! At least double spaced, most word processors will allow you to triple or even quadruple space. Consider wider spacing. When writing you may want to work in single space mode; a single spaced page at normal character pitch (about a 10) will run about one to two minutes when read aloud.

Computers and laser printers are great for letting you change the font. Increase the size of your font before printing! The larger letters and double spaced print out will make it easier to read and track your place on the page.

Number your pages. Do not staple them together. If necessary use a paperclip and remove it before you begin your speech. Place the pags on one side of the lectern. When done with the page slide it to the side. Slide the next page on top of it when done. This will minimize how intrusive your notes are to your audience.

Do not use unusually colored paper. At one meeting the presenter had his notes on a scrap of bright green paper hidden in his hand. You couldn't see the notes, but you could see the reflection of the bright paper off his white shirt!

When timing a speech that is written be sure to speak at a reasonable rate, remember to gesture, leave pauses for audience laughter if you tell a joke and expect people to laugh. I like to time a speech while standing up for improved accuracy.
