If Detroit made Cars like Silicon Valley makes Computers
and
Vice-Versa
We've all heard claims like:
If Detroit's cars had improved as much as computer then
- Cars would get 300 Miles to the Gallon
- Cost $120
- Go 250 Miles an Hour
But consider it from the other point of view
If Silicon Valley made computers the way Detroit makes Cars
- Computers would need servicing every 5 years
- You'd buy a new computer every 7 years whether you wanted it or not
- Computer crashes would rate newspaper stories and police citations
- Upgrading would involve cleaning out the glove compartment
There are some similarities already
- They're both so expensive you need a loan to buy a new one
- They both 'crash'
- No appliance but Cars and Computers ever drives user to violence or vulgarity
But some features we'd still like computers to copy from cars are
- Automatic Transmission
- Seatbelts for accidents
