FICSA Update No. 43 2001
FICSA Greets a New Associate Member
The FICSA members unanimously decided in a postal vote, which ended on 9 August 2001, to admit the Staff Association of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) as an associate member.
This brings the number of associate members to five. Associate membership is open to staff associations and unions from intergovernmental organizations which do not belong to the United Nations family and do not apply the common system terms and conditions of service. By joining FICSA they both contribute to and benefit from the activities deployed under FICSA’s auspices for the promotion and defense of the rights and interests of the international civil (or public) servants.
The IFRC is headquartered in Geneva and has some 250 staff members. Its programmes are grouped into four main core areas: promoting humanitarian principles and values; disaster response (assistance to around 30 million people annually from refugees to victims of natural disasters); disaster preparedness; and health and care in the community.
