De Edgar Allan Poe Award wordt ieder
jaar uitgereikt door de Mystery
Writers of America. Het is één van de meest prestigieuze
prijzen voor auteurs van thrillers en de nominaties worden meestal bekend
gemaakt in februari. In april van dat jaar is dan de uiteindelijke uitreiking.
De prijs wordt gegeven aan boeken die het jaar daarvoor zijn verschenen,
dus de Edgar Award 1997 is gewonnen door een boek dat verschenen is in
1996!
De Mystery Writers Of America (MWA)
is de oudste en grootste vereniging voor schrijvers van fictie en non-fictie
in Amerika voor het totale genre van thrillers, detectives en crime: oftewel
SPANNING. De Edgar Award (in totaal zijn er dertien categorieën)
is vernoemd naar Edgar Allan Poe, aangezien zijn in april 1841 verschenen
verhaal "The Murders In The Rue Morgue" (Graham's Magazine) gezien
wordt als de eerste moderne thriller.Voor de prijs komen alleen boeken
in aanmerking die in Amerika zijn uitgebracht. Alle uitgevers kunnen hun
boeken toesturen naar de verschillende juryleden en zij kiezen uiteindelijk
allemaal vijf mogelijke winnaars. De voorzitter van de MWA beslist dan
welke vijf finalisten er zijn (de nominaties) en tenslotte wordt ook de
winnaar voor dat jaar aangewezen.
