The church was built in 1862, and replaces a chapel that had been on the site since 1615.The chapel was called the Weld Chapel, after Sir John Weld, the owner of the estate at that time. The tower of the present church contains ten bells, the weight of the largest bell being 24cwt 3qrs 7lbs. The six heaviest bells were cast by Mears and Stainbank in 1874, and first rung on Whit Sunday 24th May 1874. Two more bells were added in 1879, and a further two were added in 1920. Also in the tower is a Sanctus bell that originally hung in a bell-turret in the Weld Chapel. This bell was cast in 1616, and weighs about 2½ cwt.
A book has been written describing the history of the church, its bells and its ringers, and is available from the author, Dennis Willcocks, who has been a ringer at the church since 1966. The book is called A History of Christ Church Society of Bell Ringers, and costs £4.95, plus £2.00 p & p, total £6.95 (ISBN 0 9525387 0 9).

The same author has also published a book concerning the history of the Weld family and the Weld Chapel. The family owned large amounts of land in London, as well as in Middlesex and Hertfordshire. Sir Humphrey Weld, father of Sir John Weld, was Lord Mayor of London in 1608. Sir John Weld's son, also called Humphrey, purchased Lulworth Castle in Dorset in 1641. Descendants of the Weld family still live there. The book is called 'The Weld Family of Arnold's, Southgate' and costs £5.00, plus £2.00 p & p, total £7.00 (ISBN 0 9525387 1 7). The book contains previously unpublished illustrations of the Weld Chapel.
Proceeds from both books is being donated to the Christ Church, Southgate Fabric Fund.
