Michigan sends 63 Horseshoe
Pitchers to World Tournament
The Wolverine State Horseshoe Pitchers
Association has 62 members pitching
in the 2003 World Horseshoe Tournament to be held in Eau Claire,
Wisconsin, August 4-16. A total of 1,324 pitchers from 46 states
and 5 provinces will compete.
LaVerne Fenlon, Cheboygan, will defend
her 2002 WT title in the Senior Women's class. Judy Curtiss,
Blanchard, finishing third in 2002, is a favorite to win the
Women's Open class.
Participants will gather to test their skills, determine
champions in each class and crown a World Champion for Men, Women,
Senior Men, Senior Women, Elders, Junior Girls, Junior Boys and
Juniors age 9 and under. Round-robin lineups of up to 16 pitchers
are in each class and pitch 5 40-shoe games each day for 3 days.
Pitchers with talents that range from a 5 percent ringer average
to the elite who throw 80 percent or more will all be competitive
as they are placed in a class with others having a similar ringer
average based on sanctioned tournament play. Participation in
four sanctioned tournaments qualifies a pitcher for the WT and
five sanctioned tournaments qualify a pitcher for the WSHPA state
tournament held in Kalamazoo during Labor Day weekend. For information
on sanctioned tournament pitching call NHPA Regional Director,
Steve Summerlin 517-521-1262 or e-mail ringers@cablespeed.com.
