Its not all that original, and its sort of a compisite of things I learned in several psych couses and life experiences. Almost all types of stress, depression, happiness and releif in life can be defined or even explained in terms of Cognative disonance...
What is it...
Cognative Disonance is what happens when any two or more issues cause you to have to make a decision between them. Whether they be as simple as choosing the vanilla shake over a chocolate shake or as complex as feeling torn between what your upbringing has taught you is right and what later life experiences seem to be teaching you.
I figure a measure of happieness or contentment with life is how low your cognative dissonance is. When you've made your decisions and cleared out the conflicts between issues, you are going to be a happier camper. When you delay, refuse, or simply cannot make a clear choice between things disonnance increases and your stress levels go up.
Thus... How to live a happier life? Recognize those issues that you are divided on, and settle as many of them as you can. Some things we just can't. Recognize those things you can't solve. That's a "solution" in itself.
