Software to display real-time data from GPS receivers


Program description:

GPS Display is an application for Apple Newton 2.1 devices (it performs well also on Newton MessagePad 130). Works with any NMEA 183 compatible device, connected to the Newton through the built-in serial port or any PC Card slot.


IMPORTANT to developers: We're finishing the API for developers. If you're developing Newton software or solutions and want to include GPS technology into your applications contact us.


Data displayed:

  • NavStar system time of position fix (UTC).
  • Latitude.
  • Longitude.
  • Position height over mean sea level (shown only if receiving properly enough satellites)
  • Satellite number in view.
  • Position fix type (2D or 3D)
  • Horizontal Dillution of Position.
  • Vertical Dillution of Position.
  • Real-time moving graph with satellite position over the GPS antenna. Circles represent the horizon and 45° over horizon.
  • Signal strength for each satellite.


What's needed:

  • Apple Newton MessagePad 2.x device.
  • GPS receiver with NMEA 183 serial output.
  • Connection cable.
  • GPS Display for Newton.
  • GPS signal coverage (preferable in outdoors).

GPS Display 1.0 has been fully tested with Garmin GPSII plus receivers.
