Localizer 20 Approach
May 7, 2002
I'm sure many of you have noticed that the localizer approach for runway
20
has been notamed out of service. Basically, the localizer
equipment cannot
compensate for reflections from objects off to the sides of the runway.
Because the FAA owns and maintains this equipment, they are trying to
obtain
new or used equipment that would upgrade the existing equipment and
bring the
approach back into service. In the short-term, FAA has contacted
Oklahoma
City to see if a new approach can be written for the existing situation,
but
there is no timetable as of yet for that solution.
The Department of Aviation is also pursuing a grant to purchase and
install
new state-of-the-art equipment that would be able to compensate for
these
reflection problems.
Unfortunately, to date, neither FAA nor the Department of Aviation has a
commitment for funding to replace the equipment. Please be assured
that both
the FAA and the Department of Aviation will continue to work to get the
localizer approach back in service.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me by phone, fax
or
e-mail. Perhaps it would help if I received letters from pilots
supporting
getting the approach back in service. I can forward those letters
to the
Airports District Office in Detroit to support the funding of the new
equipment.

Localizer 20 Approach
Update - May 9, 2002
The FAA is making some progress on the localizer approach. A used
14-element
antenna array is being shipped here from Wisconsin. However, there
is still
the engineering and installation to be done. At best, they are
estimating it
will be several months to get budget authority and have the installation
completed.
Oklahoma City has been contacted and someone is looking into the
feasibility
of writing a new approach for the existing situation. It is
possible that a
new approach cannot be developed for the existing situation, but we at
least
want that avenue investigated.
Next week an engineer from the FAA's Chicago office will be visiting the
Airport with some test equipment that may be able to pinpoint specific
problem areas. If they pinpoint any objects that can be removed,
we will do
so. |
