Selenicereus species (Cactaceae)
Just one of the many thousands of species of Succulent plants that we find a great deal of interest in. Not difficult to grow, tolerates temperatures down to 7 or 8 C, climbs along the greenhouse roof. The flower is around 250mm diameter, opens in the evening, and completely wilts by the morning. Quite different from what most people would recognise as a cactus. You can just make out the thin stem of the plant climbing over wires stretched across my greenhouse roof. I grow this plant in a large pot under the greenhouse bench, train it up the sides, and along the roof of the greenhouse. Regular pruning seems to encourage flowers to come at around the end of July in the U.K. The flowers of this plant also have a beautiful scent when open, completely filling the greenhouse. A stunning talking point when it is in flower. |
