St Germain's Edgbaston Birmingham U.K

Brief history

St. Germain's Edgbaston is a large Anglican parish church on the junction of City Road and Portland Road, Edgbaston in the Birmingham diocese. It was dedicated for use by the parish community on 29th September 1917; 80 years ago - 1987 was our 80th Anniversary year !
St. Germain's is the only major building constructed during the course of the First World War; it needed a special Act of Parliament! It was nearly closed in 1982 but now is home to a thriving congregation of about 220 local people.
Ninety years ago in 1907 the original 'tin' building was named 'St. Germain's'. This first church at the corner of City Road and Portland Road was built when the whole community was 'emerging from the fields' in 1895; 103 years ago. It stayed as the hall next to the church until it was replaced in 1958. More architectural notes and photos

who was St Germain ?

Born in 378, Germain practised as a lawyer in Rome, on returning to his native Gaul he married and became a high official. In 418 - much against his will - he was made Bishop of Auxerre and at once made radical changes in his mode of life, becoming a Bishop of 'exceptional ability'.
He was twice sent to Britain to help the church combat the heresy of Pelagius who did not believe in sin and the need for forgiveness, but believed that humanity was all-powerful and could do everything for itself. Germain knew that simply winning arguments would not change such a view of life and so he set up 'schools of instruction'. These schools taught about the need for Jesus Christ in bringing people to God. Germain is said to have helped in the 'Alleluia Victory' resisting a raid by the 'Picts and Scots'
St germain
There are many French churches and villages with the name of 'St. Germain'. Besides this church which took the name of St. Germain in 1907 we have not heard of any other places in Britain called St. Germain except for an ancient village and the Bishop of St. Germain in the Diocese of Truro. The Rector of the only church in the USA called St. Germain, near Seattle, visited this parish in 1996. The top French soccer team also bears his name - 'Paris S. Germain' !
