The Viking spacecraft consisted of an orbiter and a lander. The purpose of the landers was to search for life on the planet Mars. Unfortunately, the landers were not capable of moving around the Martian surface. Based on photographs and experiments that were performed, there didnt seem to be any life at the two locations. Below are the specifics on the landing sites
Viking I
Landed August 20, 1976 at Chryse Planitia
22.27 degrees N latitude
49.97 degrees W longitude
Viking II
Landed September 3, 1976 at Utopia Planitia
47.57 degrees N latitude
135.74 degrees E longitude
If Martians had sent spacecraft to these same coordinates on Earth, what would they have found?
For each location, answer the following questions (you will need an atlas or globe)
1. Where would the spacecraft have landed ? (Name the location, being
as specific as you can)
2. What would the landscape have looked like?
3. What would the weather conditions be like?
4. Would they find evidence of life? (If yes, describe it)
5. Would they find evidence of humans?
