This project is the geologist’s version of a scavenger hunt. I would
like you to find and collect three rocks. One of them must be a sedimentary
rock, one must be a metamorphic rock, and one must be an igneous rock.
Lucky for you, Long Island has all three types. How will you know which
type of rock you are looking at??? That's the easy part because Rocks Remember.
Just 'ask' the rock and it will tell you.
For each rock your must write a sentence or two explaining what specific
characteristics led you to conclude what type of rock you had.
I) Place each rock in its own bag.
2) Place a piece of paper in each bag that contains the name of the
type of rock and
your explanation.
3) Place all three bags in a larger bag, write your name and period
on the bag, and
staple the bag shut.
WARNING: It may be necessary to break the rocks before you can identify
them. If you do, make sure you wear safety glasses, long sleeves,
long pants and place the pebble in an old towel or rag before you hit it
with a hammer. This will prevent flakes from flying out and hitting you.
Do under adult supervision.
