Idle Theory

currently comprises:

Orbital Siphon Model A Java simulation model of a 250,000 km rigid pipe extending radially from the earth's equator, up which a continuous unpowered train of vehicles can rise. Totally impracticable at present, but could come in handy in 2500 AD.
Easy Meat This set of essays argues that early men were subject to intense predation, and that human ornament, sacrifice, and burial practices originated in that time.
The Expanding Sabbath This essay discusses something the economist Jeremy Rifkin said about unemployment and leisure. It suggests that the sabbath laws be re-instated, and the sabbath extended from one day to six days, in order to shorten the working week to one day, give everyone a one-day-a-week job, and create a leisure society.
3 Versions of Human History This essay considers 3 views of human history: that it's been getting worse, that it's been getting better, and that it's the same as it ever was.
Blind Spot The human eye has a blind spot. The blind spot doesn't appear as a grey blob, but appears merged into the background. This means that human visual perception entails reprocessing the raw image data received from the retina of the eye.
The Idle Theory of Evolution A series of essays illustrating the survival of the idlest. The Idle Theory of Evolution argues that the hardest-working creatures face extinction, while the idlest survive. Life tries to do as little as possible, not as much as possible.
