Some Mother’s Daughter

The hidden movement

of prostitute women against violence

by the International Prostitutes Collective

1 in 4 prostitute women are raped and over half assaulted for being sex workers. As the government reviews sexual offences, prostitute women in both the UK and the US publish their proposals to make all women safer.

Kay Mellor, creator of the award winning TV series, says: I wish Some Mother’s Daughter had been around when I was researching for Band of Gold . . . a concise, fascinating, yet disturbing account of how things really are for women who work as prostitutes.. It makes a clear and comprehensive case that until the authorities begin to value all women’s lives irrespective of how they earn a living, no woman can expect justice or social change.

New Law Journal A fascinating and at times shocking read.

Ham & High Powerful and disturbing.

Entre Nous Anyone who cares about the safety of all women would be wise to check this out.

Spectator An eye-opener, a wonderful conversation piece . . . the perfect text book for a college level humanities course. . . . a vital safety guide for women . . . a must-read for the street savvy sex worker.

Some Mother’s Daughter

"What do prostitute women and children have in common that increases their chances of being raped or assaulted? Not occupation, lifestyle or ‘morality’. But both lack social power."

Violence against sex workers is built into the law and its enforcement. In self-protection, prostitute women (and often their mothers and sisters) have given leadership to the women’s movement against rape, trafficking and other violence. A chronology of prostitutes’ resistance provides a connecting thread.

The book includes:

  • An interview with Theresa Hulme, whose daughter Julie was murdered while working on the streets of Manchester to support her children.
  • A major survey with startling revelations on who prostitute women are, how many are lesbian or bisexual, Black, mothers, how many have been raped, how many have pimps.
  • Accounts from women seeking asylum in Britain from rape and exploitation by pimps backed by government and police.
  • First hand accounts of the successful first private prosecution for rape in England brought by two sex workers, and of the protest which got a San Francisco serial rapist convicted.
  • Black women’s protest against police inaction and racism in the investigation of murders of women in the Los Angeles Black community.
  • The inside story of the San Francisco Task Force on Prostitution which recommended a shift in police priorities by vigorously enforcing laws against rape and other violence, and redirecting the over $7 million spent annually on policing prostitution, to provide resources for sex workers and for the whole community.
