Tapantí National Wildlife Refuge

Conservation area: La Amistad

Location & Size: Cartago Province, Orosí district, Paraíso de Cartago. The refuge has 6,080 Ha.

Characteristics: Surrounded by the Macho River Forest Reserve this park is characterized by rivers, gorges and waterfalls and it is estimated that 150 waterways originate on this refuge; for this reason the refuge has a small dam that produces electricity.

Fauna:

Flora: Lower montane rain forest and premontane rain forest with species such as: oak, alder, winter bark's sweetwood, lancewood, magnolias, iras, monkey apple, didymopanax (most trunk are covered with mosses, liverworts, lichens, bromeliads and epiphytic plants); tree ferns, orchids, poor man's umbrella.

Importance of the refuge: Protect the water supply of the hydroelectric dam.

Visitor facilities: Visitor center, picnic area, camping area, trails and for those interested in trout fishing the Río Grande de Orosí is occasionally stocked with this type of fish.
