Guayabo National Monument

Conservation area: Central Volcanic Range

Location & Size: Cartago Province on the slopes of Turrialba Volcano, it is located 19 Km North of the city of Turrialba. The monument has: 217 Ha.

Characteristics: Largest and most important archeological site discovered in the country.

Fauna: Birds: toucans and Montezuma oropendolas. Wildlife is not particularly abundant, but there are insects, lizards, frogs and some mammals.

Flora: Evergreen forest with species such as: elm, bitter cedar, manni and magnolia.

Importance of the Park: Conservation of the 800-1400 A.D. stone structures such as: cobbled-paved causeways and streets; terraced stairways; retaining walls; bridges; mounds; open and walled-in aqueducts; cisterns; petroglyphs; ceremonial monolithic tables; pottery shards, etc.

Visitor facilities: Park headquarters and trails. Camping allowed.
