Location & Size: Limón Province, Talamanca County on the Caribbean Coast. The refuge has: 5,013 Ha. (Terrestrial); 4,436 Ha. (Maritime).
Characteristics: Coral reefs (Uva, Manzanillo and Mona Points) that extend up to 200 meters off shore and measure 5 square kilometers.
Fauna: 358 species of birds, such as: crested mandible toucan, ornate hawk eagle, red-lored parakeet and the red-capped manakin and harpy eagle.
Mammals: Tapir and manatees.
Reptiles: Crocodile
Marine life species: Oysters, atlantic tarpon.
Flora: Primary rainforest, mangrove swamp, holillo swamp and cativo forest. The Gandoca estuary is made up almost exclusively of red mangrove.
Marine plant life: siderastrea siderea, diploria clivosa, D. Strigosa, Agaricia agaricites and porites astreoides corals.
Importance of the refuge: Protects the endangered species of the region, including one of the least spoiled coral reefs on the Caribbean Coast, as well as the mangrove oyster beds that inhabit the reef along the coastline.
Visitor facilities: Trails and camping.
