Curú National Wildlife Refuge

Location & Size: Puntarenas Province, southeast tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, 84 Ha.

Characteristics: Great place for birding and wildlife photography. The refuge has three scenic beaches: Curú, Quesera and Poza Colorada, ideal for swimming.

Fauna: 115 species of birds, also white-faced monkeys. Marine species: crabs, chitons, lobsters, giant conchs and oysters. The beach is an important nesting site for hawksbill, ridley and leatherback turtles.

Flora: Semi-deciduous forest, mangrove swamp, rocky and sandy seashores. Species: silk cotton trees, spiny cedar, locust, gonzalo alves, swollen-thorn acacia.

Importance of the refuge: Terrestrial/marine plant & animal life sanctuary.

Visitor facilities: Primitive Sleeping quarters, trails.
