Cahuita National Park

Conservation area: Amistad

Location & Size: Limón Province on the Caribbean Coast, 42 km S.E. of the city of Limón. The National Park has: 1, 067 Ha. (Terrestrial) and 22,400 Ha. (Maritime).

Characteristics: White sandy beaches and a large mature coral reef. An 18th century shipwreck is another interesting feature.

Fauna: Several swamp birds such as the green ibis, green & rufous kingfisher, yellow-crowned night heron and Northern boat-billed heron.

Mammals: Howler monkeys, raccoons, coatis, etc.

Marine animal life: French angelfish, rock beauty, blue parrotfish, sea cucumber, lobster, white shrimp, green turtle and various crustaceans. Crabs are abundant.

Flora: Swamp forest, moist forest, woodland with abundance of coconut groves.

Marine plant life: Some of the coral species are; moose horn coral, deer horn coral and smooth brain coral. Also found Venus sea fans and sea urchins.

Importance of the Park: Protect Costa Rica's largest coral reef.

Visitor facilities: Trails; Campground; Camping is allowed.
