Location & Size: Puntarenas Province, southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, 1172 Ha. (Terrestrial) & 1790 Ha. (Maritime)
Characteristics: Extraordinary scenery with rock formations carved out by the sea. Dense forests growing down to the edges of the rock-strewn beaches.
Fauna: Seabirds and other species of birds, such as currasow, crested guan, etc. Mammals: white-faced, howler and spider monkeys; porcupines, agoutis, squirrels, raccoons, white-tailed deer, kinkajous, long-nosed armadillos and margay cats.
Marine species: Crabs, chitons, lobsters, giant conchs, nerites and clams.
Flora: Evergreen and deciduous forest. 119 tree species, such as the lancewood, bastard cedar, wild plum, gumbo-limbo, trumpet tree, dogwood, frangipani, spiny cedar, chicle and espavel.
Importance of the reserve: Refuge for seabirds (brown pelican, magnificent frigatebird, brown booby, laughing gulls and common terns). Also the Cabo Blanco Island, 1.6 Km off the coast is an important nesting site for seabirds.
Visitor facilities: Trails. No camping permitted.
