Arenal National Park

Conservation area: Arenal

Location & Size: Guanacaste & Alajuela Province, the refuge is managed by Tilarán, San Carlos & San Ramón Counties. The national park has 2,920 Ha.

Characteristics: Contains one of the most active volcanoes and an artificial lake, both are the main attraction of the area.

Fauna: Most common species: paca, Baird's tapir, white-nosed coati, sloth, jaguar, deer.

Bird species: Parrots, parakeets, resplendent quetzal.

Reptiles: Snakes such as parrot snake, fer-de-lance and boa constrictor.

Flora: Lower montane rainforest and lower montane wet forest, with species such as the mountain guayabo, freijo, rosewood, chicle tree, balsa, etc.

Importance of the Park: Important replenishment region, as the waters drained into the Arenal Lake are used for the production of electricity and fish farming projects
