Dying of cancer, and destitute, Grant decided to write his memoirs to support his family. Publishers offered him little, but a fellow named Sam Clemens decided to help his old friend. The Memoirs, completed only four days before his death, rank among the best-known of military memoirs, and brought his family out of poverty.
