Rutherford B. Hayes 1877 - 1881

Rutherford B. Hayes entered office as a result of a disputed election, in which partisan maneuvering may have handed him the victory over the Democrat, Samuel Tilden. He reformed civil service, withdrew the Army from the South, and supported sound money.
