Jimmy Carter 1977 - 1981

Jimmy Carter took office as a "Moral Presence" after the wrenching turmoil of Watergate. Yet what began as a hopeful Presidency was itself turned inside-out by events overseas, especially the taking of American hostages by the revolutionary Islamic government of Iran. These hostages were not released while Carter remained in office.
